About MOT's
The MOT certificate is issued by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). The test
inspects aspects of car safety, roadworthiness and exhaust emissions.
What does having a valid MOT certificate actually mean?
Basically it just ensures that all UK motorists keep their vehicles in order up to a minimum
standard of safety and repair, regardless of how old it is, who drives it or how it is used.
An MOT test can only confirm that your vehicle met all of the required standards of
roadworthiness on the day of testing. It does not mean that your car will remain in the same
condition for the next twelve months, or that the vehicle does not need to have routine
maintenance and servicing if it has a valid MOT certificate.
Does my car need an MOT?
A car does not require an MOT until it is three years old, after that it will need to be tested every 12 months.
When can I get it tested?
You must have your car re-tested before the expiry date on your current MOT certificate,
but you can get it tested up to 28 days before the expiry date - giving you a 13-month MOT certificate.
How long does it take?
An MOT test will take around 1 hour to complete.
What happens if I have any problems with my certificate?
No problem - if we tested it last time, we'll have the vehicle records on our computer, or we can get them from VOSA. You can contact VOSA on 0870 330 044 or via their website.
What happens if I let my current certificate expire?
You are breaking the law and could be prosecuted. These days it is easier than ever to detect
vehicles on the roads without a valid MOT certificate. You also need a valid MOT to renew
your road tax and in the event of an accident, your insurance cover could be affected.
